I have Cervical Dystonia, diagnosed 2 years ago. When diagnosed I didn't think much of it as the symptoms were slight. It was diagnosed through an increase in migraines of almost daily for over 6 months.
2 years on and I have experienced horrific spasms and pain, pain that is unimaginable. I isolated myself and just wanted to shrink away from the world. Then I adopted a baby Maine Coon, Archie to my little family. Archie joined Raphael and Luna, 7 year old Maine Coons. Archie had the perfect temperament to become an Assistance Animal and ever since has been by much side 100% of the time. He changed everything! He gave me mobility and being back in Community. I go to the local Pool with him, he does Qigong and Sound Healing classes with me, and we walk and walk and walk with the aid of his stroller. He relieves the spasms through sensory tricks and gives me a sense of calm and relaxation. He helps reduce the pain and anxiety of this disorder.
No one can even imagine how life changing Dystonia is, the pulling and twisting of muscles, the pain, the headaches, vertigo, nausea, depression and anxiety all of this leads to loss of life, work and being in Community. It causes loss of hope and dreams.
My constant love are my 3 Maine Coons, my family, my friends and my colleagues. I am so grateful for the sense of purpose and friendships my work gives me, I am grateful when I am home with Luna, Raphael and Archie, they surround me, ok smother me in love and laughter, I am grateful for my family and my friends who are always there for me.
I might have daily challenges but I do have a lot to be grateful for.
Thank you for supporting research in to Dystonia.
